The History of Rum

The production of Rum appears to have originated in the West Indies and is first mentioned in records from Barbados in about 1650.

Traditionally the liquor was made by fermenting and then distilling sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice, and has often been associated with the Royal Navy, where it was mixed with water or beer to make grog, and Piracy where it was consumed as a drink called bumbo.

Morant Bay Rum is a Premium Rum, and as with other premium sipping spirits such as Cognac and Scotch whisky it is in a special market category. Due to the way boutique type brands like ours are carefully produced, they have more character and flavour than their “mixing” cousins. Our rum is generally consumed neat, or we recommend that it is poured over ice.

Spiced rums obtain their flavours by the addition of mixing spices such as cinnamon, rosemary, absinthe, aniseed, pepper and sometimes caramel, many are darker in colour and based on gold rums.

Morant Bay Rum is unique in that it is red (or pink) in colour, and the smooth, sweet taste is enhanced by the 42% alcohol content.
